My Story

Mabey Ski 4 Volcanoes in 4 Days: 24-29 February 2020

Having come from generations of skiers who have passed on the passion for snow and adventure, I want to be able to do the same for our future generations.

Over the past 10 years, I've witnessed retreating glaciers in New Zealand, grassy ski resorts throughout Europe in the middle of winter, and deadly typhoons in Japan. Our winters are starting to disappear and as a passionate snowsports-enthusiast within the travel industry, it’s essential to act now in order to protect our planet for our future generations.

I have been following Protect Our Winters (POW) for many years now, and after ongoing discussions with friends and colleagues about our vanishing ski seasons, it was time to turn my words into actions. I wanted to create a fun, but challenging way to shout about climate change with Mabey Ski, and 4 volcanoes in 4 days seemed to hit the nail on the head.

From 24-29 February, I will be joined by skiers and snowboarders from around the world to take on Niseko’s famous volcanoes whilst raising funds for POW UK. In addition to this, Mabey Ski will be offsetting every challenger's carbon footprint by a tree-planting project with POW UK’s partner, Mossy Earth, not to mention the fact we'll be swapping carbon-emitting chairlifts and snowcats for touring skis and split-boards.

Sneak preview of the final ascent
"With a 5:00am start we’ll be tackling Niseko's tallest volcano – Mt Yotei. Not only is it the largest of Niseko’s vast volcanic terrain, it’s also the most dramatic – and the most difficult. It requires a high level of fitness and takes around 6 hours to reach the summit. And for those who want to up the ante – if the conditions are right – you can ski into the volcano’s crater at the top. Having said that, once you get down, you’ll have to climb back up… and then ski all the way back down!"

If you would like to make a donation to help support POW UK on their mission to protect our winters, I would be incredibly grateful. All funds raised from this challenge will go towards developing POW UK's own carbon literacy programme, consisting of unique content tailored to the outdoor community to help them understand and make positive change. This will then be 'taken to the community' to work with and educate groups, clubs, organisations, companies and individuals.

What else can you do?
Many people are concerned about climate change but feel overwhelmed with information on how to reduce their impact on the planet. We're now introducing our guests to simple tools like POW's carbon footprint calculator which allow individuals to determine their impact on climate change by inputting details such as flight time, bus journey or accommodation stay. It's important to learn how much each area of your life contributes to your carbon footprint in order to start making changes. Use this tool for your next trip...
